At Skillful Antics, we want to help others understand the internet and how it works for you, which is why we take the time to explain concepts like SEO. The internet is full of references to SEO, and online marketing experts mention it often. What is it? And is it truly important to your website and online business?

What Is SEO

First, let’s define SEO. The acronym stands for “Search Engine Optimization.” Basically, the concept is that you are increasing your chances of coming up on the first few – or even the first – pages of a search engine’s results. Of course, it is safe to assume that you’re familiar with search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo. When properly executed, SEO techniques can help your website to pop up when someone types in the keywords that relate to your business. So what are keywords?

What Are Keywords?

Keywords are words or phrases that people type into search engines to get information. The search engine then uses these keywords to sort through the content on websites to determine the relevance of the site to the search query. The more relevant your website, the more likely you are to have it ranked higher on the search engine’s results. Thus, it is important to add keywords to your website by using them in your content. Specifically, you want to use keywords that relate to your industry, business, and/or product. If you choose to use keywords that are popular, but not actually connected to your business, the search engines can actually penalize your site. How, then, can you be sure to choose the best keywords?

It is important to keep your keywords as relevant to your business, goals, and/or product as possible. Using words that are common to your industry can be a good start, but being too generic probably won’t get you the best recognition or ranking from search engines. On the other hand, it is also unwise to be too specific with the majority of your keywords. Try to find a happy middle ground. Second, think about your base clientele when choosing your keywords. Who are you hoping to draw in and how do you want them to find you? Thinking about these things might help you to generate some ideas. Also, it is important to take into account your competitors and the keywords that they use. Try testing out your keywords on various search engines to see what the top results are and go on from there.
